“Dear GMT staff:

The trip has been an unforgettable experience. We gained hand-on medical knowledge, provided free medical care to the local community with the instructions of doctors. It has been a special experience for me as I saw there are still many people out there who are in need of help. The staff and other trippers were very friendly. We were a good team and we still keep in touch ever since the winter break.

”My name is Angèle and I am one of the McGill student who had the chance to travel to Nicaragua this winter break and work with the GMT team. I am writing you because I want you to know that this trip was the best experience in my life so far. Before this trip, I considered a lot a career in international medical humanitarian aid and thanks to GMT, I got a taste of it and it fortified so much my will to pursuit my dreams. Because of this trip, I got bitten by the travel bug, especially for humanitarian trips! I am very grateful that you allow in this program trippers to try to diagnose, examine and assess a treatment plan. It gave me a great glimpse of a doctor’s life, I learned a lot from the diverse cases and I am certain that this type of work is what I want to do in the future. Moreover, I encountered great and inspiring people during this trip. I appreciate very much Dr. Mendoza as he was very patient into explaining us the mechanisms behind every medical problem. I also always considered teaching medicine in my career and Dr. Mendoza is certainly my role model. I enjoyed very much Dr. Alexis and Dr. Justo`s company, especially during New Year Eve. They are really nice, funny, and heartwarming. I had a lot of fun with them and I am glad that I actually made friendship bonds overseas! Osmar was also very friendly, kind and good as he cares and worries for the students he’s in charge of. During all the clinical days, I stayed with Johana, the translator, as she was very nice and was doing a great job in translating while teaching and encouraging us a lot. Furthermore, during the clinical days, my team encountered some depressing cases and I admire a lot Dr. Jennifer’s interpersonal skills and learned a lot from her. In brief, this trip was great: clinical days were beyond expectations (not only I learned a lot of medical content, but I also improved a lot my English and my Spanish!), GMT staff is very competent and friendly, Nicaragua is a beautiful country (à couper le souffle!), Nicaraguan people are lovely, food was tasty everywhere, activities were fun, and lodgment was impeccable. I thank you for creating and giving me this opportunity and I hope that I will get the chance to work again with the GMT team (if you need staff anywhere or in any type of work, don’t hesitate to ask me, I would be glad to volunteer again!).
